Starwood acquired the Renaissance Wailea Hotel from the Shinwa Golf Group in 2003. The original plan was for it to be transformed into a St. Regis brand or a W brand hotel and a later plan was to transform it into an ultra-luxury Bacarrat brand condominiuum resort. The hotel ended up closing in 2007, mostly due to financial issues. The Renaissance Wailea Hotel remained empty for several years but finally it was re-developed at a cost of about $90 million as an Andaz brand hotel in a joint venture between Starwood and Hyatt.
