January 11-13 and 18-20, 2002
"COWGIRLS" MUSICAL IN WAIMEA
described as "country vs classical music in a real howdown showdown!" The show will be performed at Parker School Theater in Waimea. The talented "HiloBillies" band will play a short, 15 minute set before the curtain goes up, and provide music during the show, as well. F ri. and Sat., 7 pm; Sun. 2 pm.

January 13, 2002
THE VOGGY MTN. RAMBLERS, Kona's own bluegrass band, will perform at the Kona Brew Pub on Sunday, from 5-8pm. The pub has put a few rows of chairs in front of the band now, too, so you can get a beer and listen to the music if you're waiting for a table - or if you're finished with your dinner and just want to hang out for a while!

WHALE WATCH CRUISE
Board the boat Coral See, listen to the hauntingly beautiful slack key music of John Keawe, enjoy pupus and door prizes. A benefit for Kona Outdoor Circle, the oldest environmental nonprofit organization on the Big Island. Reservations required. Time: 3:30 to 5:30. Board at Kailua Pier, Kailua-Kona. Cost: $35 KOC members, $45 all others.

5TH ANNUAL HAWAII HEART WALK & HEALTH FAIR 2002
A great cause to reduce heart disease and stroke and educate the public to exercise healthy habits. Choose from two routes starting at Edith Kanakaole Stadium in Hilo, at 8 am. Health Fair from 7 to 11am will feature free glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure screening. Also other non-profit and community groups promoting EKG, healthy cooking, keiki IDs, to name a few.

4th ANNUAL TASTE OF HILO
From 1-3 pm at Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin Sangha Hall. An International Festival of the Pacific Event. Proceeds benefit the Hawaii Community College Culinary Arts program. Admission $35. Call the Japanese Chamber of Commerce for more information.

REEFTALK - MARINE MAMMALS IN HAWAII (Big Island)
Just how many andwhat species of marine mammals are found in Hawaiian waters? Exactly where do they go and what do they do when they are here? Answers to theseintriguing questions will be discussed by noted whale scientist and educator Joe Mobley, PhD. This lecture is jointly sponsored by University of Hawaii Sea Grant Program and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Free; held from 6:30pm - 8:30pm at Kealakehe High School Library in Kona.

HALAU HULA O HA'ALELEA WITH KUMU HULA RAYLENE LANCASTER
The first performance of the Na Mea Hawai'i Hula Kahiko performance series, 2002 season, will be held at the pa hula (outdoor hula stage) in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Hawaiian arts & crafts demonstrations at Volcano Art Center Gallery from 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Free (Park entrance fees may apply).
