If you live anywhere near Southern California (and maybe even if you don't) you won't want to miss the lineup of performers at the 2nd Annual Southern California Slack Key Guitar Festival (http://www.socalslackkeyfest.com/) organized by Mitchell Chang and Kala Moa Entertainment. The event will take place January 18, 2009 at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center at 1935 Manhattan Beach Boulevard in Redondo Beach California.
Every time I look at the event Web site new artists have been added, and I just noticed today that another one of my all-time favorite groups has been added... Maunalua! Here are the entertainers scheduled to appear so far:
- Barry Flanagan (the haole half of Hapa (http://www.hapa.com))
- Jeff Peterson (http://www.jeffpetersonguitar.com/) (incredible classical and jazz trained slack key guitarist)
- Jim "Kimo" West (http://www.jimkimowest.com/) (Los Angeles based slack key guitarist)
- John Keawe (http://www.johnkeawe.com/) (slack key guitarist from Hawi, Hawaii Island)
- Makana (http://www.myspace.com/makanaworld) (wild guitarist integrating traditional and contemporary sounds)
- Maunalua (http://www.maunalua.com/) (Bobby Moderow Jr., Bruce Spencer, Kahi Kaonohi - I love these guys!)
- Pahinui Hawaiian Band (Cyril Pahinui (http://www.cyrilpahinui.com/), and other legends of Hawaiian music)
Buy your tickets early because the event is sure to sell out. For more information visit the official event Web site at SoCalSlackKeyFest.com (http://www.socalslackkeyfest.com/). To get an idea of what to expect, see the YouTube Video of the 2008 Festival (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8C-Ae_QB6-M).
