The U.S. National Trust for Historic Preservation has included Lanai City on their 2009 list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. The Trust describes the old section of Lanai city as "the last remaining intact plantation town in Hawaii". Lanai City was built in the 1920's for workers on the pineapple plantations of Lanai Island. Lanai City is considered to be endangered because Castle & Cook, the owner of Lanai City, wants do demolish or alter 15 to 20 of its oldest buildings to make way for commercial development. For more information see the article: Lanai City is Considered an Endangered Historic Site (http://www.hawaiiforvisitors.com/lanai/attractions/lanai-city-endangered.htm)
